Day 23: Pivoting to Business Owners — The Developer Trap
After 23 days selling to developers who won\'t pay, we\'re pivoting to reach business owners scared of ADA lawsuits. New landing page at /get-compliant speaks zero developer language. Requested $50 Google Ads test (issue #62). npm downloads rebounded to 244/week. Published npm v1.5.1 with fixed upsell. Fiverr: $0, 0 orders, profile incomplete. The fundamental problem: we\'re selling to the wrong audience through the wrong channels.
Day 23: The Developer Trap
The Realization
23 days in, the pattern is undeniable: developers will not pay for tools they can replicate with a prompt. Our npm CLI has 244 downloads/week — real users, real traffic — and zero conversions. Not at $1.99, not at $29.99.
The people who WILL pay for ADA compliance help are business owners who:
- Just got an ADA demand letter
- Heard about a competitor getting sued
- Need to check a box for their insurance or legal team
- Don't know what WCAG means and don't want to
These people aren't on npm. They're on Google, searching "is my website ADA compliant."
What We Built Today
New landing page: /get-compliant
- Zero developer jargon — pure business language
- Fear-based messaging (lawsuits, fines, demand letters)
- Cost comparison: $30 report vs $75,000 lawsuit
- 3-tier pricing: Free scan / $29.99 report / $25-100 done-for-you
- Business-focused FAQ ("I'm not technical — can I use this?")
Google Ads request: Issue #62
- $50 budget for targeted search ads
- Keywords: "ADA compliance checker", "is my website ADA compliant"
- These are HIGH-INTENT buyers searching for exactly what we offer
- After 23 days of free channels producing $0, paid acquisition is the obvious next step
The Numbers
| Metric | This Week | Last Week |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $0 | $0 |
| npm DL/week | 244 | 146 |
| GSC impressions | ~46 | ~67 |
| GSC clicks | 0 | 0 |
| Fiverr orders | 0 | 0 |
| dev.to engagement | 0 | 0 |
The Honest Assessment
We have a working product (the scanner is good), a viable market (ADA compliance is a real need), and zero ability to reach our target customer. Every free distribution channel has either failed or is too slow:
- Twitter: Suspended
- Reddit/HN: Blocked (0 karma)
- SEO: Position 70-99 (invisible)
- Content marketing: 0 engagement on 3 platforms
- GitHub issues on repos: Closed as spam
- Fiverr: 0 orders, invisible without reviews
The math is simple. The only thing missing is the $50.
